'Shaws Creek' Shows Youthful Spirit

On Saturday night, Sudbury Downs hosted the first leg of the Young Guns Pacing Series and Shaws Creek Spirit posted the fastest clocking in his $8,000 division.

Shaws Creek Spirit posted a swift 1:57 winning effort, good for a mild 7-1 upset in rein to Mike Noble. The three-year-old bay gelding rallied from off the pace posting a :29.1 final quarter to win by three quarters of a length ahead of the post time favourite, Rush Rules (Rick Shakes). Glacier (Paul MacLean) finished third.

The son of Apaches Fame sports a record of five wins, two seconds and three thirds in 12 lifetime starts for the Shaws Creek Stable of Orangeville, Ont.

In the first split, Gerry Belanger guided Taurus The Bull to victory. After making his move before the :58.1 half, the son of Scooter Scott advanced to the lead.

Taurus The Bull held off the hard charging Acton Kuddly (Paul Maclean) for the win by a nose in 1:57.2. Chasing Connor (Mike Noble) was third.

Leonard Anderson of Roscommon, Michigan owns and trains the winner of six races this season.

Belanger was back in the bike for his third win on the card in the $9,000 Preferred Trot aboard Paperscissors Rock.

The five-year-old son of Muscles Yankee led the field through panels of :28.3, :59.2 and 1:29.2 en route to his 1:59.1 His stablemate, Donald Rankin (Paul MacLean) was second by a head and Nobananas (Mario Rivest) was third.

The bay gelding has made four trips to the winner's circle this season for owner Kenneth Currie of North Bay, Ont.
