Red Mile To Close For Winter

For the first time in years, The Red Mile may be closing its doors for the winter.

The Herald-Leader has reported that the Lexington, Kentucky racetrack expects to shutdown around November 15 until July 2009.

"We've always lost money on winter training," Joe Costa, president and CEO of The Red Mile told The Herald-Leader.

While the track will still be open for simulcast betting, Costa says it has become less economically viable to keep the barns open and the track maintained when there is no live racing.

Bill Napier, executive secretary of the Kentucky Harness Horsemen's Association told The Herald-Leader that the KHHA has stepped in to try and help the local horsemen explore possible solutions as they will not be permitted to lease the barns and track for winter training.
