Pablo Angus showed absolutely no mercy to the trotting counterparts he faced on Tuesday night at Sulky Trois Rivieres in the $43,000 J-C St. Jacques Final.
The six-year-old son of Fortuna Winner, who was sent off as the 1-2 favourite, sat the pocket behind Mc Cooeye (Jacques Hebert) as the field rolled past the quarter pole in :28.4.
Marcel Barrieau wheeled Pablo Angus off the rail in the second quarter, and that proved to be the winning move for the gelding. He laid down splits of :58 and 1:26.2 before finishing off his foes with a :29.3 final frame in the 1:56 decision.
The mile time erased nearly three full seconds from the former mark of 1:58.3, held by Jason Will and established a new overall trotting track record.
It was seven lengths back to runner-up Mc Cooeye, and another seven lengths back to Fortuna Eminic (Gilles Dion), who finished third.
The Pierre Lacharite trainee won for the second time this season and for the 21st time in his career. Pablo Angus, who is owned by Ecuries Pierre Lacharite Inc. of Laval and Mario Bourgea of Stanbridge East, QC, bumped his lifetime earnings to $490,000 with the win.
