Kalahari Riff pleased fans with his winning performance in the $6,000 Saskatchewan Standardbred Stake at Marquis Downs on Saturday.
Kalahari Riff (Kevin Siever) got away second from the inside post as Check Stop (Glenn LeDrew) led the field through opening fractions of :28 and :58.1. Making his move before the half, Siever took his charge straight to the front, clearing past the 1:27 third quarter mark. With a :30.3 final quarter, Kalahari Riff pulled away from the field by four and three-quarter lengths to win in 1:57.3.
Anover Deal (Brian Gray) was second and Shadow Promises (Brad LeDrew) was third.
Kalahari Riff notched his eighth win in 12 starts this year for Siever of Swift Current, Sask. In 31 lifetime starts, the chestnut gelding out of Bo Knows Jate has never finished out of the money.
In other action, Outlaw Watch Me took the $2,000 Open for fillies and mares in rein to Brian Gray.
The six-year-old mare out of Straight Path advanced on the early pacesetter Three Promises (Barry McNaughton) and poked a head in front at the third quarter mark. The two battled each other through the stretch, but it was Outlaw Watch Me who prevailed, sprinting away by two lengths to win in 1:59.1. Alcars Xit (Phil Giesbrecht) was third.
Gray owns and trains the mare, who has made three other trips to the winner's circle this year.
