Horse Racing Alberta today announced the appointment of Shirley McClellan as the Chair of the Board.
Shirley McClellan was born in Hanna, AB and attended school in Cereal and Red Deer. McClellan served close to 20 years with the Alberta Legislature; she was first elected in a by election on November 23, 1987.
Over the years, McClellan served many portfolios, including: Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Minister of Finance, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations, Minister of Community Development, and Minister of Health, Minister Responsible for the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission.
On November 22, 2004, McClellan was elected to a sixth term representing the constituency of Drumheller-Stettler and was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance. She resigned her seat on January 15, 2007.
"I have great interest in seeing the industry move successfully into the future. Horse racing is viable in Alberta and can achieve even greater success thanks to the dedication of the Board of Directors of HRA, the dedicated men and woman who work and have invested in the industry and the operators of our fine racing facilities," McClellan said.
"The industry should feel very fortunate to have Shirley McClellan as Chair of the HRA Board. I served with her in the Alberta Legislature and she is a hard working, dedicated leader," emphasized HRA Vice Chair, Don Getty.
McClellan currently farms in New Brigden with her husband Lloyd and her son Mitchell.
