Howmacs Dragon pulled off a 12-1 upset to capture the $15,734 Erwin Andrew Memorial Final, sponsored by Meridian Farms and Standardbred Canada, at Summerside Raceway on Wednesday.
The summer long event has travelled to numerous tracks across the Maritimes and the top eight mares competed in a thrilling final on Wednesday.
Done Like A Dinner (Ryan Ellis) protected the rail and set the tempo in :28.1, :57.4 and 1:27.3. It was not until the half when she saw her first challenger, Abby Best (Kenny Arsenault), who was towing Howmacs Dragon and driver Marc Campbell into contention.
Howmacs Dragon sat less than four lengths from the front in fifth at the third stanza and that is when Campbell asked the six-year-old Dragon Again mare for pace. Unfortunately for her rivals, Howmacs Dragon responded and she did so in a big way as she flew home in :28.2 to score a quarter-length victory in 1:56.4.
Abby Best finished in the place spot while the show went to favoured My Fine Lady (Todd Trites).
Neil Bambrick trains Howmacs Dragon for owner Howmacs Farms Ltd. In 17 seasonal starts, she is 3-4-3 with earnings of $15,939. The 31st win of her career boosted her bankroll to $129,653.
