Harness driver Wally Hennessey had the hot hands Friday at the Isle Pompano Park, winning six races on the program, including the $14,000 feature pace for mares with Lucy Lucy in a lifetime mark of 1:52.3.
The fifth race main event started off with newcomer Biggest Big Bertha (Bruce Ranger), an 11-race winner this year, shooting to the early lead with Hypnotize (Dan Clements) in second place by the opening quarter mile in :27.2.
The action then heated up as driver Anthony Napolitano came charging up first-over with Nonuknlady and pressed the leaders to the half-mile marker in :56.2. Nonuknlady was unable to keep up the pressure by the three-quarter pole in 1:24 but that was when Hennessey started his move with Lucy Lucy, who had been racing in fourth place along the rail.
Hypnotize and Clements pulled the pocket at the top of the stretch to come after Biggest Big Bertha but could not pass the race leader in the stretch, but Lucy Lucy and Hennessey did have the speed and they came charging on the outside down the stretch and blew by the leaders in the final strides to post a three-quarter length triumph. Biggest Big Bertha held for second with Hypnotize third.
It was the second win this year for Lucy Lucy, a Florida-sired four-year-old mare by Tough Sir from the Albert Albert mare, Small Change. She was bred and is trained and owned by Kim and Jay Sears of Osteen, Florida.
