Check Le Look had his sights set on winning the $12,500 third leg of the Champions Trot on Saturday night at Sudbury Downs and he refused to let a sloppy surface or his 29-1 odds stand in the way.
Check Le Look, a six-year-old gelding, was sent straight to the lead by Mario Rivest after the favourite, Zorgwijk Fortunate (Paul MacLean), made an early miscue. The Marc Bourgon trainee carved out fractions of :29.4, 1:01 and 1:31.2 without facing any challengers.
The son of Glory B River upped his bankroll to $118,955 with his 20th lifetime win in a clocking of 2:02.1 for owner Robert Bourgon of Levack, Ont.
True High Voltage (Scott Altizer) finished five lengths back in second and Armbro Edward (Justin Turcotte) was third.
In other action, Seawind Gambler and trainer/driver Allan Hohner prevailed in the $10,000 Not Listed Preferred Pace.
After a :29.3 first quarter, the post time favourite tipped out from third and passed the early pacesetter, Rush Rules (Mike MacNiell). Thomson Seelster (Gerry Belanger) applied first-over pressure through a :59.3 half, but Seawind Gambler pulled away by two lengths as the field reached the third quarter station in 1:28.3. With a :29.1 final effort, the bay sealed the deal, winning in 1:57.4.
Rush Rules finished second and Smart Barney (Justin Turcotte) was third.
Seawind Gambler, a five-year-old gelded son of Astreos, made his 10th visit to the winner's circle, lifting his bankroll to $152,054 for co-owners David Haney of Waterloo and Lawrence Smith of Elmira, Ont.
