Beshear Signs Emergency Steroid Rule

Published: September 8, 2008 08:39 pm EDT

On Friday, September 5, Kentucky governor Steve Beshear signed an emergency rule which will see a virtual ban on the use of anabolic steroids in the state racing industry.

The rule bans steroids above naturally occurring levels in a horse's system. Most anabolic steroids are banned outright; three are prohibited within 60 days of a race.

"It shows that we are able to act quickly," Lisa Underwood, executive director of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, was quoted as saying in a Louisville Courier-Journal article.

"I think the ban on anabolic steroids will help to provide a level playing field for owners, trainers and the betting public."
