Off at 15-1, Western Summit led every step to take the $10,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace at Fraser Downs on Thursday night (Sept. 8).

Driver Dave Kelly cleared command with the six-year-old Vertical Horizon mare to a :28 first quarter and cruised by a :58.4 half. In High Cotton pulled first over and ranged towards the pacesetter to three-quarters in 1:28.1 before getting turned away around the final bend. That left pocket-sitter Century Mach as the closest threat to Western Summit coming for home, and she only managed to inch within three-quarter lengths of the winner at the end of a 1:56.1 mile. Moosette rallied from second over for third while In High Cotton took fourth.

Owned and trained by Jim Marino, Western Summit won her 14th race from 80 starts and has now earned $102,292. She paid $33.70 to win.
