After having been dispatched as the public’s 4-1 third choice, Post 2 starter Euchred ($11.40) reigned supreme in the $3,500 Invitational Pace on Sunday (Sept. 9) at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway, as the brown Shadow Play gelding made every pole a winning one en route to a one-length victory in 1:54.
David Dowling was in tow to the Terry Gallant trainee, and the duo cruised through the splits in :27.2, :56.1 and 1:24.4. They came home with a :29.1 final panel and held on for the win over the Kenny Arsenault-driven Czar Seelster, who had raced overland but couldn’t gobble up all of the real estate. Rose Run Quest (driven by Gary Chappell), who had raced first up earlier in the mile, finished third, three and a quarter lengths behind the victor.
Courtesy of the winner’s share of the purse, Euchred is now on the verge of hitting the $100,000 mark in career earnings. Euchred has been owned by Kayla Habicht Walker (of Inverness, NS) since March of 2016.
Euchred was one of five driving wins on the program for Dowling, who caught fire during the back half of the program. Starting in Race 5, Dowling won five of the last nine dashes on the program. His victories came aboard After The Lovin ($6.80) In Race 5, Twice As Bright ($2.70) in Race 6, Young Man Matt ($8.40) in Race 10, Euchred ($11.40) in Race 12 and Cartoon Daddy ($11.50) in Race 13.
