Panmunjom Captures Chippin Memorial

Trainer-driver Garry MacDonald sent Panmunjom wire-to-wire to win this year's edition of the $7,500 Jennie & Joe Chippin Memorial Pace on Saturday at Fredericton Raceway.

With the inside post advantage, Panmunjom grabbed the lead off the gate and carved out fractions of :27.4, :57.1 and 1:26.4 en route to the one length victory in 1:56 flat. Carnivore and Terry Gallant edged out Joseph Michael and Todd Trites for second.

The six-year-old son of The Panderosa is owned by Dale and Ronnie Rennie of Elmsdale, P.E.I. He notched his fourth win of the season in 26 starts and 19th lifetime to push his bankroll to $507,838.

Sent postward as the 7-2 third choice, Panmunjom paid $9.10 to win.

Kaylas Sophia defeated a field of male pacers in the $2,500 Albert Goodine Memorial Junior Invitational with Gilles Barrieau aboard for trainer Ron Chamberlain and owner Dale Orr of Oak Bay, N.B. The popular six-year-old Apaches Fame mare prevailed by a neck in 1:57.2 over P H Bestman and Todd Trites. There was a dead-heat for third four lengths behind between Encore Seelster, driven by Ryan Ellis, and Woodmere Bigsplash with Stephen Trites.

Kaylas Sophia paid $4.40 to win for the fifth time this year in 32 starts and 13th time in her career.

Driven by Mike Stevenson, Charolettes Maggie fought off previous division winners J K Special and General Luckypercy to win the $4,480 third leg of the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series in 1:57.4. Favourite General Luckypercy and Barrieau missed by a neck while the Todd Trites-driven Shooters Bay and Private Joke with Gallant aboard finished third and fourth within one length of the winner. J K Special and Garry MacDonald faded to fifth.

Charolettes Maggie, who was making her first start in the series, paid $10.30 to win. The four-year-old Royal Mattjesty mare is trained by Tom Weatherbie and owned by Shaun MacIsaac of Charlottetown.

The Atlantic Aged Mares Series will continue on Sunday, September 16 at Summerside Raceway before cumulating on Saturday, October 13 at Charlottetown Driving Park.
