It is well known that grooms are the unsung heroes of the horse racing industry. Now, those that muck stalls, truck everywhere and log the long hours now have a chance to get paid like a 'five-per-center.'
Monticello Raceway has announced that on Wednesday, September 14 and Thursday, September 15, it will be presenting its second edition of the Caretakers Classic. One dash scheduled for each of the race dates will feature horses driven by caretakers from the track's backstretch.
The grooms participating will compete over the usual one-mile distance in jog carts and will not be using whips.
Monticello has announced that 12 caretakers will be split into a pair of six-horse races.
