Smoky Moon completed a sweep of the elimination and final of the MHHI Mares Stake at Killarney on Saturday for the hot-handed Don Howlett and trainer Richard Rey.
Favourite Smoky Moon and Howlett pulled the pocket in Saturday's $3,000 final to take over the lead from Down Home Stylish and Richard Remillard after the half and cruised home to a two length victory in 2:02. Gottaluckydeal, in rein to Cory Manning, came on for second and Real Pretty, driven by George Isman, finished third over Down Home Stylish.
Rey trains the four-year-old Fort Apache mare, who earned her third win in five starts on the Manitoba circuit this year, for Winnipeg, M.B. owners Trevor and Michael Williams.
The victory was one of three on the 10-race card for Howlett.
Somethinsgoinon also completed a sweep of his own, winning the first two 1-1/2-mile and 1-1/4-mile legs of the MHHI $2,500 Claiming Series in August at Morris before taking Saturday's $2,800 final at Killarney.
Favourite Somethinsgoinon confronted early leader Rain Gauge and Howlett past the half and wore him down for the quarter-length victory in 2:02.2 for the father-daughter, driver-trainer team of Darryl and Paula Mason. Rounding out the top three finishers was the Garett Isman-driven Cheyenne Dusk, who finished five and a half lengths behind.
Somethinsgoinon has won five times in nine starts since shipping to Manitoba this year. The five-year-old Camystic gelding is owned by Dallas and Lottie McGee of Deloraine, M.B. and Verne Rea of Calgary, Alta.
