With a pair of solid qualifying miles under his belt as tighteners, sophomore pacing colt Captains Quarters will be pointed to an appearance in the 2024 Little Brown Jug.
The third and final leg of pacing's Triple Crown, the 2024 Little Brown Jug is slated for Thursday, Sept. 19 at the fabled Delaware County Fairgrounds, and the two-heat tussle is one of harness racing's most coveted prizes.
Rebounding off a seventh-place finish in the Max C. Hempt Memorial on Aug. 17, Captains Quarters has qualified now two consective Fridays at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Just missing by a head to older pacing mare Always B Naughty one week ago, Captains Quarters hit the Campbellville track on Friday, Sept. 6 and looked primed and ready for his next assignment.
Driver Jody Jamieson hustled the son of Captaintreacherous - Prescient Beauty out to command from post seven and the speedy sophomore did all the heavy lifting from there. After fractions of :27, :55.1 and 1:22.2, Captains Quarters cruised home in what turned out to be a race against time as he hit the wire nearly 10 lengths the best in 1:50.2.
Rich Stiles owns Captains Quarters, who sports a summary of 4-3-3 from 13 career appearances with nearly $900,000 in purses. The bay is trained by Herb Holland, who confirmed to Trot Insider that the Little Brown Jug is the pacer's next stakes event.
