Taking the lead past the quarter, Dawson Springs withstood a first-over challenge from Bastiano to win the $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot at Flamboro Downs on Saturday (Sept. 5).

Odds-on favourite Willyorwonthe held control past a :28.2 first quarter before yielding command to Dawson Springs moving for the stretch first time. Bastiano raced third to a :58 half but edged first over heading for the backstretch.

Bastiano marched to match strides with Dawson Springs to three-quarters in 1:27.2 and stayed at the leader’s throat through the turn. However Dawson Springs rebuffed his challenger through the stretch, inching to a three-quarter length win in 1:58 over Bastiano with Willyorwonthe third.

A five-year-old gelding by Cantab Hall, Dawson Springs won his first race from 17 starts this season and his ninth from 72 overall, earning $185,848. Corey Johnson trains and co-owns the $10.20 winner with Michael Goldberg while J Harris sat in the sulky.
