Major Mile For Twin B Legend

Twin B Legend struck fear in the hearts of Ontario-bred two-year-old pacing colts and geldings when he blazed to a 1:51.2 victory in a conditioned event for rookies at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday

Trainer Jack Darling indicated in a pre-race interview on Bet Night Live he was looking for a big performance leading up to the September 18 Gold Series eliminations at Mohawk Racetrack, and Darling certainly got his wish

Twin B Legend was allowed to settle off the early speed in Monday’s assignment before making a bold move in the backstretch for driver Randy Waples. The son of Mach Three-What An Attitude managed to work his way into the pocket just after the mid-way point, and he was back out and moving just before the three-quarter pole was reached.

Waples summoned up :27.2 final quarter speed from the gelding, and that was good enough to earn the win by three-quarters of a length in 1:51.2. Race favourite Dapper Denzil, who sliced out splits of :27.2, :55.3 and 1:23.4, had to settle for second with Achilles Blue Chip finishing third.

“I had to make a move early in the race because I didn’t want Rick Zeron’s horse [Dapper Denzil] to get away from me too much; he’s a good colt,” said driver Randy Waples when asked about his tactics. “I’ve really been looking forward to driving this horse since the last time I drove him at Flamboro. There was a horse who made a break beside him and hooked his wheel and took him right out of the race. He acted like a real nice horse. I baby raced him for Jack [trainer Darling] the first couple times behind the gate, and he’s a really, really nice colt.”

The gelding was purchased for $47,000 at last year’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale by the Jack Darling Stables Ltd of Cambridge, ON.

The opening session of this year’s edition of the Canadian Open Yearling Sale, which is a two-day event, gets underway this Saturday at 12 noon in the SC Sale Pavilion in the backstretch at Flamboro Downs.
