OSS Leaders In A Sunday Showdown

Clinton Raceway fans will be stacked up along the rail for the 10th race on Sunday afternoon as four of the province’s top three-year-old pacing colts battle in one $18,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots division.

Division point leader Champagne Phil, second-ranked Dull Roar, sixth-ranked Mach Set Go, and seventh-ranked Panpero Firpo will be lined up along the starting gate in Sunday’s 10th race, and all four will be eager to wrap up the regular season on a winning note.

Mach Set Go will benefit from post one as he aims to score his second straight win for new trainer Anthony Montini and owners Holland Racing Stable of Aurora and Albina Montini of Acton. The Mach Three son logged an impressive personal best 1:51 in the Aug. 26 Grassroots leg at Mohawk Racetrack.

Panpero Firpo skipped the Aug. 26 to take a run at the Gold Series colts, finishing seventh in the Aug. 19 leg at Mohawk. The No Pan Intended son is two-for-two in Grassroots action this summer and will be looking for win number three from post three. Dave Menary trains Panpero Firpo for owner-breeder Peter Pan Stables Inc. of Pepper Pike, OH.

All six colts in the 10th race will be looking to knock off division leader Champagne Phil, who had a four-race Grassroots win streak halted by Mach Set Go on Aug. 26. Kenneth Oliver trains the Shanghai Phil gelding for ICR Racing of Pefferlaw and will send the winner of $82,618 out from post five.

Mach Three son Dull Roar will line up along the outer rail at post seven for trainer Jeff Gillis of Hillsburgh and his partners Ken Henwood of Vaughan, Mac Nichol of Burlington and Gerald Stay of Buffalo, NY. The number two colt in the point standings rides into Clinton on a two race Grassroots win streak.

In addition to the talent laden 10th race, the three-year-old pacing colts will also be featured in races one, three and 11 on Clinton Raceway’s Sunday, Sept. 8 program, which gets under way at 1:30 p.m.
