Racing continued at The Track On 2 on Sunday, Sept. 3, with Vegas Gambler proving to be a sure thing in the $7,000 Open Pace.
Scratched down to a field of three, the feature event went as the sixth race on the 10-race card. Driver Nathan Sobey took full advantage of starting from the rail, protecting his inside position with Vegas Gambler to cut the opening quarter in :28.1. Sobey tapped the brakes as the trio made their way up the backstretch, leading to the halfway point in :58.2 over Munchie Chris and David Kelly. Vegas Gambler continued to have things his way on the front as the pacers moved onto the final turn with race favourite Keystone Tenacious the first to move from third with driver Brandon Campbell as the field hit three-quarters in 1:28.3.
As the trio turned for home, Vegas Gambler led the sprint to the wire with a two-length advantage on his rivals. Vegas Gambler breezed home in :26.1 to open up by just over three lengths on the line to score the 1:54.4 victory. Keystone Tenacious held for the place position, with Munchie Chris finishing third. Vegas Gambler paid $4.20 for the victory.
Owned and trained by Rod Starkewski, Vegas Gambler picked up his fourth victory in 17 tries in 2023. With the victory, the four-year-old son of Mystery Chase-Nevada pushed his career bankroll to $228,638.
