Millionaire trotter Guardian Angel AS prevailed off a perfect pocket trip in Friday night’s (September 3) featured $45,000 Open Handicap Trot at Yonkers Raceway.
Driver Matt Kakaley worked out the pocket trip for Guardian Angel AS behind 2-5 choice Its Academic (George Brennan) through fractions of :27.2, :56.3 and 1:25.1. In the lane, Kakaley brought Guardian Angel AS to the outside and he was able to forge his way by the pacesetter on his way to winning by three-quarters of a length in 1:54.2. Its Academic held second over Mississippi Storm (Jordan Stratton).
Guardian Angel AS, a seven-year-old Archangel stallion, is trained by Anette Lorentzon for owner/breeder ACL Stuteri AB and partner Kjell Johansson. Guardian Angel AS is now a 27-time winner in his career and he pushed his earnings to $1.59 million.
Sent off at 4-1, he paid $10 to win and led a $21.60 exacta and a $51 trifecta.
Favourites went zero-for-five during Friday night’s Pick 5 sequence at Yonkers Raceway, capped off by an 18-1 upset by Magic Vacation in the last leg. As a result, there were no winning tickets and there will be a $2,596.64 carryover and a $10,000 guaranteed pool in the wager on Monday night’s (September 6) program.
The guarantee in the Pick 5 is being offered as part of the United States Trotting Association’s Strategic Wagering Program. Free past performances for the Pick 5, courtesy of TrackMaster, will be available here. The Pick 5, which begins in race five, has a takeout rate of 20 per cent.
