With owner/trainer Bruce Richardson in the sulky, Stormont Kate ($4) delivered a front-stepping score as the even-money favourite in the co-featured $11,000 Preferred 2 Trot on Sunday night (September 3) at Flamboro Downs.
After an early tussle for the lead, Stormont Kate made the front from post four and carved out panels of :27.3, :57.4 and 1:27 before fighting off a stern challenger from April Rose to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.2. Muscle Matters followed over four lengths behind in third.
Stormont Kate notched her sixth win of the season from 23 starts and pushed her bankroll to $56,257. Lifetime, the six-year-old daughter of Kadabra has won 24 races and $265,198 in purses.
In the $11,000 Preferred 2 Pace, Lets Wait And See ($13.10) tracked Thorn In Your Side from the pocket through fractions of :27.2, :56.2 and 1:25 before getting the last dig in to score the 1:53.4 victory by three-quarters of a length. He closed through the passing lane while his rivals fanned out wide turning for home. Colin Kelly drove the six-year-old Shadow Play gelding, who is trained by Scott Friend and owned by Gordon Hart. Classy Hill finished third ahead of Who Doesnt.
Stepping up off a victory at the Preferred 3 level over Grand River Raceway, Lets Wait And See notched his sixth win of the year from 29 starts and pushed his annual income to $39,374. A 16-time career winner, he now has $145,514 in overall earnings.
Driven by Ed Hensley and trained by Travis Cullen, Sing Like An Angel ($11.80) won the $7,500 Preferred 3 for pacing mares in wire-to-wire fashion, stopping the clock in 1:55.1. The Empiressister N finished one and a half lengths behind in second and Love To Roll was third.
The win was Sing Like An Angel's third of the year and 48th lifetime, bumping her bankroll to $313,024. Cullen shares ownership of the seven-year-old Bettors Delight mare with his mother Jodie, and Keith and Margaret Hannah.
