"We've probably been guilty in the past of overpromising and underdelivering, so the past year and a half we've tried to fly under the radar and get our own house in order.

"

On today's episode of Trot Radio, Norm Borg speaks to Darcy Marler, the president of the United Horsemen of Alberta, for an update on the track now slated for completion in 2012. Marler's optimism comes in part from an untapped geographical area with tremendous growth potential with respect to gaming.

"We've got the largest unused gaming area in Alberta," said Marler, "there's no other casinos or gaming facilities from basically northern Calgary to Red Deer. That's a large stretch, it's very attractive for gaming groups when there's a moratorium for new licenses."

Marler confirms that there will be plans for now for one track - a one-mile track that will be shared between thoroughbred and harness racing, with plans for an additional track with what Marler considers Phase 2.
