Speed Again converted off a pocket trip to prevail in a tight finish in this week's $34,000 Preferred Pace at Mohawk Racetrack early Saturday night.
Driver Jody Jamieson settled Speed Again into the pocket spot behind the leaving Camaes Fellow (Chris Christoforou) into a :26.1 first quarter.
Camaes Fellow took a breather to the half in :55.1 and began to pick up the pace with State Treasurer (Jack Moiseyev) advancing first over from third en route to the third quarter mark, which was clocked in 1:22.4.
State Treasurer battled with Camaes Fellow down the stretch, but Speed Again came on between the top two and held off the closers to win the evening's opener in 1:49 flat. Last week's Preferred winner Upfront Hoosierboy (Randy Waples) rallied from second over to place and the trailing favourite, Bestofbest Hanover (Sylvain Filion), came on for third with a flashy :25-second final frame. The field of five was separated by just a couple of lengths.
Speed Again was sent postward as the longest shot on the board at odds of 8-1 and paid $19.60 to win.
The four-year-old son of Dragaon Again is trained by Jeff Gillis, who also shares ownership with Ken Henwood of Vaughan, Ont., Mac Nichol of Burlington, Ont., and Gerald Stay of Buffalo, New York.
He has earned five of his 15 career wins this season while boosting his bankroll to $662,311.
