Waasmula defeated a field dominated by David Menary and Tony O'Sullivan trainees to win this week's edition of the $42,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday night.
The Bruce Goit trainee swept from third to first after the :26.3 opening quarter and cruised through middle splits of :54.1 and 1:22.4 en route to the 1:50.4 score. Driven by Randy Waples, Waasmula held off the closing favourite, Tea Party Princess (Scott Zeron), by three-quarters of a length while her Menary stablemate Modern Connection (Sylvain Filion) settled for third off a pocket trip. O'Sullivan students Warrawee Koine (Doug McNair) and Maureen Rocks (Chris Christoforou) earned the final paycheques finishing fourth and fifth.
Brent Vincent of Allenford, Ont. owns and bred the four-year-old Million Dollar Cam-Waasmowin mare, who notched her second win of the season and pushed her 2012 earnings over $80,000 while her career bankroll climbed past the $350,000 mark.
The 2-1 second choice paid $6.60 to win.
