After any number of predictable results in Yonkers Raceway’s weekly Filly and Mare Open Handicap Pace, longshots ruled the roost Friday night.
Dune In Red (Mark MacDonald, $21.80) photoed Justhaventmetuyet (Jason Bartlett) in 1:52.4 after 3-10 choice Cinamony (George Brennan) couldn’t sustain a second move.
Dune In Red, assigned post position No. 4, gained the first lead before Skippin By (Jordan Stratton) left over her. That one fronted the fray through early fractions of :27.1 and :55.2, while eight-hole ordered Cinamony found a seat fourth.
The fave was out and moving between intermission and 1:23.3 three-quarters, but the dozen-to-one leader wasn’t overly impressed. Skippin By stood her ground in and out of the final turn, but the swarm was coming.
Dune In Red ducked in, while Justhaventmetuyet went wide. When the dust settled, “in” whipped “wide” by a short nose, with Carobbean Pacetry, Cinamony and Strings (Eric Carlson) rounding out the payees.
For third choice Dune In Red, a five-year-old daughter of Duneside Perch owned (as Hero Stables) and trained by Bob Krivelin, the win was her fifth in 20 seasonal starts. The exacta paid $109, with the triple returning $504.
Saturday evening, it’s New York Night of Champions (Part II), with Yonkers hosting a quartet of $225,000 sire stakes finals for two-year-olds (races two through five included in the dozen-race card).
