A training hat trick by Thomas Riley and a driving five pack for Reg Gassien secured the meet titles for the two as the 2022 season came to a curtain’s fall at Kawartha Downs on Saturday night (Sept. 24).
Gassien’s five wins began teamed with Riley in the first on the 10-race card, with Outkast Blue Chip (winning mile in 1:54.3, $2.90 to win) grabbing the victory. The two then paired again for wins with Four For Orr (1:55, $5.50) and in the race following with Laugh Now (2:00.3, $12) before Gassien scored his remaining two wins for other connections. He swept the late double with wins by Sonofamillionaire (1:57.3, $2.30) and Julio Lauxmont (1:58.1, $16.10).
With the training hat trick, Thomas Riley leapt to the top of the training standings with 13 victories on the meet to best John MacMillan, who had 12. David Snowden was third with eight wins.
Reg Gassien meanwhile held a cushioned lead in the driver’s race which he cemented with 40 wins on the season. Doug Brown finished second with 26 wins and Nick Boyd took third with 25.
