Trainer Ben Baillargeon and the Rankins – owners Tom and Elizabeth – had a strong 1-2 punch in Monday’s featured trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and the talented tandem filled the Exacta ticket as many expected.
The betting public made Royal Witch the 4-5 choice in the $25,000 affair, and she rolled to the lead from Post 5. She put up the opening quarter in :28.3, but was overtaken in the backstretch by stablemate Run Director and driver Sylvain Filion.
Run Director, who was sent off at odds of 2-1, then carved out middle splits of :56.3 and 1:25 before sprinting home in :27.4 to win in 1:52.4 over Royal Witch and Dancer Hall.
The four-year-old son of Kadabra-Keep The Spirit is a homebred who now boasts a 5-0-1 record from 13 trips to the track this season. The 11-time winner pushed his career cash stash to $545,787 with the victory.
