After having been overlooked at odds of 4-1 from Post 1, the Anthony Beaton-trained and Rodney Gillis-driven Makes Me Stupid ($10.70) recorded a gate-to-wire victory in 1:58.2 during Inverness Raceway’s $1,100 Winners-Over Pace on Sunday (Sept. 23).
The field kept close tabs on the seven-year-old Art Official gelding through the opening quarter (:29.3) and half (:59.3), but the career winner of 25 races and $70,000 in purses got away from his rivals after that.
Makes Me Stupid – who has now won five of his 24 seasonal starts – had a three-length lead by the 1:29.2 three-quarters pole and was up by five at the head of the lane.
The bay, who is also owned by Beaton, of Inverness, Nova Scotia, finished his victory off with a 29-second final quarter and posted a four and a quarter-length margin of victory.
The Alex MacQuarrie-driven Doubleshotascotch, who had raced first-up from third, finished second. Imacaroltoo, who had Walter Walker in the bike, took a pocket ride as the post time choice and settled for third, beaten five and a half lengths.
