It was smooth sailing for R Royal Port, who had things his way, leading every step of the way to victory in the $11,000 Preferred Trot at Flamboro Downs on Sunday, Sept. 22.
Leaving from post three, driver Scott Coulter put R Royal Port on the point immediately off the gate, leading to the quarter in :28. Gold Edition (J Harris) tipped to the outside and moved into third before dropping back into line as R Royal Port put up the half in :56.4. The lead was two for R Royal Port on the backstretch, going unchallenged to three-quarters in 1:26.
Pocket-sitter Prince Archie (Steven Hudon) was the only one within reach of the leader as R Royal Port turned for home two lengths clear. Trotting confidently to the wire, victory was secured by 1-1/2 lengths over Price Archie for R Royal Port in 1:56.1. It was four lengths back to Tymal Riggs (Travis Henry), who finished third.
Gerard Demers trains the 10-time winner in 28 seasonal outings for owner La Ferme Tag Inc. R Royal Port is a five-year-old gelded son of Archangel-World Class Izzy and has made $145,660 lifetime, with $92,920 of that made this season.
The win was one of two on the night for the Coulter/Demers pairing who got the job done in the finale as well with Explosive Motion.
