After finishing sixth beaten 13 lengths in last week’s $12,000 Open Pace at Fraser Downs, trainer/driver Jim Marino went back to the drawing board with Cool Cowboy looking for answers – and clearly he found some.
The six-year-old son of Brandons Cowboy-Cool Grin bounced back and posted a sharp, 1:52.2 triumph in Friday’s follow-up effort in the main event.
Marino pressed the pedal and sent Cool Cowboy right to the position of command, and once the pacer cleared his foes it was game over for everyone else. The pacer sprinted through fractions of :27, :56.4 and 1:24.3 before storming home in :27.4 to win by a length over race favourite Da Magician in 1:52.2. Taking home the show dough was Sabine Pass.
Sent off as the 3-1 second choice in the wagering, Cool Cowboy found his way to victory lane for the fifth time this season and for the 25th time in his career. The $6,000 payday lifted his lifetime cash stash to $326,348 for Marino and the J J J Stables of Prince George, BC.
