A group of seven squared off in Thursday’s feature race – the $12,000 Preferred – at Rideau Carleton Raceway and Beach Runner A M used his off-the-pace skills to pull off an 18-1 upset for driver Darrell Coville.
The five-year-old son of Beach Of Faith-Run Nicki Run was in no hurry in the early stages of the mile, but that wasn’t the case for Montreal Phil. That front-stepping foe sprinted to the lead and ripped through panels of :26.1, :55.4 and 1:24.4. Beach Runner A M, who got away seventh, was treated to a second-over trip in the middle stages of the mile before uncorking a :28.3 closing panel. That propelled her to the neck decision over Its A Good Thing in 1:54.2. Montreal Phil was a lapped-on third.
