Grassrooters Gearing Up For Grand River

Muscle Magic and Twin B Alibi sit first and fourth in the three-year-old trotting filly Grassroots point standings, but neither filly has found the Ontario Sires Stakes winner's circle in recent weeks.

The fillies make their last regular season start at Grand River Raceway on Friday, Sept. 6 and their local connections would love to wrap things up with a win.

Trainer Wayne Henry will steer Twin B Alibi from Post 6 in the second $18,000 Grassroots division, looking to rebound from a pair of disappointing results in late August. At Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 19 the Angus Hall daughter made a late break and finished ninth, then on Aug. 27 she finished eighth over a sloppy Georgian Downs oval.

Prior to those efforts Twin B Alibi had rung up two wins and one second in Grassroots action for Arthur resident Henry and his partners Daylon Farms of Komoka and the Estate of Daniel J. McCann of Parkhill. Heading into the regular season finale the filly has 126 points and is assured of one of 10 berths in the Sept. 21 Grassroots Championship, but her connections would like to see her arrive there on a winning note.

Division point leader Muscle Magic will be hampered by the outside Post 8 in her effort to score Grassroots win number three. The Muscle Mass daughter finished second in both her Aug. 19 and 27 divisions after scoring open-length victories at Kawartha Downs on July 20 and Sudbury Downs on Aug. 11.

Rockwood resident Ben Baillargeon trains Muscle Magic for his partners Nunzio Vena of Bolton and Santo Vena of Brampton. The partners will be cheering on the division leader — whose 175 points are 25 more than her nearest rival — in Friday’s sixth race.

Grand River Raceway’s Fun and Frivolity Friday Night gets under way at 7:05 p.m., with the three-year-old trotting fillies taking centre stage in Races 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.
