2009 CTHS Yearling Sale Recap

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale took place on September 8 and 12 at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion in Toronto, Ont., resulting in 303 yearlings selling for over $5.5 million

.

The Selected Session, which took place on Tuesday, resulted in 155 yearlings selling for $4,672,000, representing a drop in gross sales of 19.8%. The number sold increased from 149 to 155, and the RNA remained consistent from last year at 30.4%. The average price declined from $39,131 in 2008 to $30,142 in 2009, representing a decline of 22.9%. In Saturday's Open Session, 148 yearlings sold for $851,800, representing a decline of 34.9%. While the RNA dropped from 31.4% to 24.8% over last year, with 45 horses not sold, the average decreased 32.5%.

Lana Sniderman-Berg purchased the sale topper during Tuesday's Selected session for $155,000, a bay colt by hot sire Medaglia dOro who is out of the stakes-placed and stakes-producing mare Words of Royalty. The colt was consigned by Woodlands (Gail Wood), Agent.

Four $100,000 purchases tied for second billing, with a son of Grade 2 stakes winner Strut the Stage selling to Toronto businessmen Frank Annecchini and Rocco D'Alimonte, and a dark bay colt by multiple graded stakes winner Survivalist being purchased by Brian Lynch, agent for Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey. Both colts were consigned by Richard G. Hogan, Agent.

Rounding off the tie for second was a North Light (IRE) colt purchased by Bear Stables, Ltd. through the consignment of Susan Y. Foreman, Agent, and another Survivalist colt which was purchased by Roger Attfield through the Michael C. Byrne consignment, Agent for Park Stud.

Topping the Open Session was a Mobil--Hong Kong Dancer colt purchased by Martha Gonzalez for $35,000 through the consignment of Hill 'N' Dale Sales Agency, Agent.

Much to everyone's delight, both sessions of the sale were available on the CTHS website for viewing through a live webcast, resulting in a record 2,000 viewers from around the world who logged on simultaneously to watch the sale.
