Raising Rusty led his foes every step of the way to take the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Trot at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Thursday night (Sept. 15).
Trainer-driver Stephane Pouliot pushed for the front with Raising Rusty from the pylon post to park Fit Bitt by a :28.3 first quarter. Crossfit, the 8-5 favourite, then vacated his spot from third after a :58.2 half to press the tempo-setter to three-quarters. By that station in 1:27.1, Crossfit inched closer on the leader coming for home, but Raising Rusty held his competitor at bay by a half-length in a 1:56.1 mile. Fit Bitt finished third and Comeonover Hanover took fourth.
Winning his 19th race from 90 starts, Raising Rusty has now earned $114,159 for owner 9096 9205 Quebec Inc. The five-year-old Kadabra gelding paid $6.60 to win.
