'Osiris' In Record Setter At Hoosier

Heavy rains and a sloppy track would not deter freshman pacing colt Odds On Osiris from establishing a track record clocking of 1:50.3 in Thursday’s $69,000 Indiana Sires Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings at Hoosier Park.

With Peter Wrenn in the bike, Odds On Osiris re-established the track record for two-year-old pacing geldings by a fifth of a second over a sloppy rated track and extended his win streak to four in the process.

Leaving from post eight, Odds On Osiris left just enough to get a spot along the rail in fourth. Stellar BB and Ronnie Gillespie were the first to get a call through the opening panel in :26.3 before yielding the lead to Always And Again and Trace Tetrick just before the half in :55.1.

When the field reached the three-quarters in 1:23.4, Odds On Osiris had ranged up and was ready to strike from first-over. Turning for home, Wrenn asked his mount for more and Odds On Osiris found another gear. Utilizing a :26.3 final panel, Odds On Osiris finished seven lengths to the good under a hand drive. Straight Up Cool and Mike Oosting along with Francis Underwood and Sam Widger rallied well late to get up for second and third, respectively. As the heavy 1-2 favourite, Odds On Osiris returned $3.00 at the betting windows.

“To be honest, I haven’t really figured him all the way out,” Wrenn said in the winner’s circle. “I don’t know how he races best just yet. At this point, he’s still very green. I don’t think he knows how he likes to race best. He just never gets tired, let’s hope he never figures out how to get tired.”

Trained by Melanie Wrenn, the gelded son of Rockin Image-Antigua Hanover recorded his fourth lifetime victory from six trips behind the starting gate. Odds On Osiris was a winner in the 2019 Fox Stake and has now bankrolled $123,395 for Odds On Racing.

In the second division of the stakes action, Clever Character extended a win streak of his own to three after a 1:53 score. With regular pilot Dale Hiteman in the sulky, Clever Character utilized a second-over trip and a :26.3 closing kick to get the win by a head over Northern Cadilac and Trace Tetrick. Sawyers Desire and Ricky Macomber also paced strong to the wire to round out the Trifecta. As the 1-2 favourite, Clever Character returned $3.00 at the betting windows.

Trained and owned by Timothy Smith, Clever Character has now won five of seven lifetime starts and has yet to finish worse than second in his young career. The gelded son of Tellitlikeitis-Ruby Delight now sports a lifetime bankroll of $129,375.

Indiana Sires Stakes action continues at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Friday, September 13 with two $49,500 divisions for the three-year-old pacing colts and geldings. The evening’s 13-race card will also feature a $20,000 Open Pace and a $10,000 Guaranteed Hoosier High-5 pool in the last race of the program.
