A pair of winners driven by Braxten Boyd gave trainer/owner Mike Deters and partner Joel Warner a sweep of the co-featured Open events at Tioga Downs on Sunday, Sept. 12.
Anchors Away ($6) held on to take the $9,000 Open 2 Handicap Trot for the connections.
Joey Pro (Wally Hennessey) led through a quarter in :27.2 and half in :56.4 before Anchors Away made his move first-over down the backstretch. He took a short lead to three-quarters in 1:25.3.
As the field entered the stretch, a mad scramble was on as they went five across the track. As the trotters reached deep stretch, it was down to two as Sortie (Marcus Miller) came charging while Anchors Away dug in and held on to win in 1:55.4. Sortie had to settle for second while Jammin Jack (Corey Braden) finished third.
Anchors Away is a four-year-old gelding by Whom Shall I Fear. The win was his ninth from 20 starts this year and his 14th victory overall.
Mighty Santana N ($3.20) later cruised to an easy win in the $9,000 Open 2 Handicap Pace for Team Deters.
Agedcheddar Hanover (Wally Hennessey) went to the front but Mighty Santana N came flying by and got the lead just before hitting the first quarter in :27.1. He continued to lead to the half in :55.2 and three-quarters in 1:23 while Mississippi Rabbit (Mike Simons) went first-over down the backstretch.
As they made the turn for home, Mighty Santana N let out another gear and made it a race for second. He breezed home to win easily in 1:51.3. Agedcheddar Hanover was second-best and Mississippi Rabbit finished third.
Mighty Santana N is an eight-year-old Santanna Blue Chip gelding, who has earned all six of his career wins this year through 28 starts.
Boyd drove four winners in all and Deters trained three. They combined for another win with Hidden Assassin ($2.30). Boyd got his other victory with KJ Leo ($10.40) for trainer Gary Messenger.
