Trevor Henry drove both upsetter Another Great Mass and front-stepper Look A Diamond to victories in the $32,000 features for Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots starters on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Another Great Mass rolled uncovered at 12-1 and grinded down favourite Mike Me Up to prevail by a head in the event for sophomore male trotters. The gelding sat fifth for Henry behind early action, with Stonebridge Wings (Bob McClure) circling up out of the nine-hole to take over past the quarter in :27.2 before Maize And Blue (Doug McNair) and Mike Me Up (Tyler Borth) simultaneously launched from second and third, respectively. Mike Me Up came out with the lead while Maize And Blue retained the pocket.
Another Great Mass tipped off the cones passing the half in :56.2 and was just off the leader’s flank while advancing to three-quarters in 1:25.2. Mike Me Up led down the lane with Maize And Blue taking aim at the pylons and Another Great Mass chipping away to the outside. The former two tailed off in the final strides, and Another Great Mass reached past Mike Me Up for a 1:54 victory. Maize And Blue finished third.
The win for Another Great Mass was his second this year in 12 starts for trainer Ed Peconi and owner Wade Peconi of Stanchel, P.E.I. The Muscle Mass-Incredibility gelding’s other seasonal win came in the first Grassroots leg. He has won five of 22 career starts and has earned $259,082. The longshot returned $27.70.
Look A Diamond won in the Grassroots-starters class for the third time this season as she scored with a two-move mile in the filly trot contest. Henry marched her out of post six to the top, yielded to Ronda May K (Jody Jamieson) approaching a :27.4 quarter, then directed the filly back to command. Grassroots divisional point leader Upgrade (Todd Ratchford) moved first-up racing to three-quarters in 1:26.3 but was unable to sustain the bid, and Look A Diamond trotted home under Henry high lines to hold off a closing Elbows Up (Jonathan Drury) by a half-length in 1:54.3. Hp Imagine (James MacDonald) came on for third.
Peter Hamilton of London, Ont., owns, trains and bred Look A Diamond, who has won 10 of 17 appearances this year. The Lookslikeachpndale-Black Diamond Star filly is now 10-for-22 lifetime with $111,270 in bankroll. She paid $7.40 to win.
