Logan Park secured his third Gold Series win in the sole $158,800 three-year-old trotting colt division at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday, Aug. 9, keeping a stubborn head in front of Fashion Frenzie at the wire.
Logan Park left smartly from Post 1 in the field of 11 and landed in fifth as Highland Mowgli zipped out to a :26.4 quarter. Lightly rated HP Running Mass took a brief turn on the front heading by the :56.1 half, but driver Jody Jamieson had Logan Park on the move and the colt was in command, fending off a challenge from Lexus Kody, at the 1:24.4 three-quarters. The fan favourite dug in down the stretch to hold off a charging Fashion Frenzie and record a 1:52.2 personal best. Lexus Kody stayed game for third. All three colts are by sire Archangel.
“He raced really tough tonight,” said Jamieson. “I think I used him three or four times and he still hung on. He’s got a lot of guts and needed them tonight.”
Guelph resident Jamieson steers Logan Park for trainer Rob Fellows of Rockwood and owners Outofthepark Stable of Rockwood, Reg Higgs of Strathroy and Arpad Szabo of Bradford, ON, who were impressed with the colt’s effort.
“It was a tough race, there was lots of movement, lots of action and horses had to make moves. Jody did a heck of a job getting him out and getting him into the flow, and then there was no real rest. That’s a good mile, 1:52.2,” said Fellows. “That horse that shook loose late, Fashion Frenzie, if he drives straighter he beats us and you’re talking to them instead of me, and I know that, that’s kind of the way the horse business goes. It’s tough racing right now and everybody is trying to find a pecking order.”
With his third straight Gold Series win Logan Park has established himself at the head of the three-year-old trotting colt pecking order with a perfect 150 points. Lexus Kody and Fashion Frenzie are second and third with 87 and 80 points, respectively. The group will face off for the fourth time this season on Aug. 23 at Woodbine Mohawk Park before beginning a month-long stretch of open stake action that starts with eliminations for the Goodtimes on Sept. 4.
“I think the rest of his races are here for the rest of the season so that will be nice. We’re just a few minutes away so he can be home eating hay in his own stall real quick,” said Fellows. “Hopefully he can behave and stay healthy and sound. These type of races take a lot out of them, they need a few days to recover, so it’s all about trying to keep them healthy and sound.”
Through seven sophomore starts Logan Park has recorded four wins and two seconds for earnings of $194,600, boosting his lifetime total to $317,900.
On Tuesday, Aug. 10 Woodbine Mohawk Park fans will get a look at the Grassroots division of the three-year-old trotting colt class. The colts will compete in three $21,800 divisions, going postward as Races 1, 4 and 6.
