The record books at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway continued to take a beating, as Woodmere Stealdeal stopped by on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 9) as part of his Maritime stakes campaign.
Woodmere Stealdeal took the fastest dash of the all-stakes card at the Prince County oval while setting a new track record for two-year-old pacing colts of 1:55.2 and tying the fastest mile ever by a rookie pacer on the Eastern seaboard of Canada. The historic mile was a recorded in a $7,500 split of the George Callbeck Memorial for two-year-old pacing colts. Sock It Away held the former track record of 1:56 for two-year-old males. Marc Campbell was in the bike behind the Danny Romo-trained Woodmere Stealdeal for owners Robert Sumarah and Kevin Dorey.
The Myles Heffernan Jr. stable was razor sharp on the afternoon card, with Tequila Tuesday delivering a 1:58.3 track record performance in the lone $10,300 Tyndal Semple Memorial three-year-old stakes division. Campbell was at the lines for owner Jackie Heffernan. The trip lowered the previous 1:59.1 track record set by Waiting On A Woman in 2011 and tied by Mile Hill Willie in 2019.
Heffernan’s other win came when Little Miss Ava captured a $7,000 Callbeck filly race in 1:58.2 for catch driver Gilles Barrieau.
Trainer Tom Weatherbie had a double on the day from his Charlottetown stable, as Saltwater Savage (Mark Bradley) won his $7,500 Callbeck division for two-year-old pacing colts in 1:56.2 and Western Wish (Brodie MacPhee) won a $7,000 filly division in 1:57.4.
The other $7,500 Callbeck colt divisions were won by Steel Reefer (Gilles Barrieau) as the heavy favourite in 1:58.1, and Mr Rielly (Corey MacPherson) in 1:58.2.
Southfield Skye won the fastest $7,000 Callbeck two-year-old filly division with a 1:56.3 open-length victory for trainer Glen MacKay and driver Adam Merner.
Tobins Brownie (David Dowling) was a winner in her $7,000 filly split in 2:00.4.
Mr Finlay Ridge extended his win streak to three in the $9,850 Callbeck two-year-old trot division for trainer-driver Clare MacDonald.
The $4,000 Island Oceans Trot Classic legs, presented by JD Marine & Diving Inc., were won by Whim Road Gem (Jack Panting) in 1:58.4 and Hop Up (MacPherson) in 1:58.3.
Total handle on the card was $48,034.
