Sea Donkey and driver Stephane Gendron were victorious in the 105th edition of Quebec's Le 5 Milles race on Sunday afternoon at Hippodrome de la Vallée in Saint-Aimé-des-Lacs.
Sea Donkey led throughout the marathon and completed the 10 laps around the half-mile track in a time of 10:59.1 with three other rivals distanced and the rest of the 10-horse field pulling up before completion, including defending champion Our Star and Mario Charron. Bless Bless (Jocelyn Gendron) was second with Ok Diablo (Pierre Marc Longpre) and Reel (Guy Corbeil) finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Marc Lemay owns and trains the winning five-year-old pacer, who was making his fourth start on the Quebec fairs circuit. The son of Always A Virgin earned his first victory in 25 races this season and fifth lifetime, pushing his bankroll to $55,430.
Other highlights from the day included Beer Maggs' 2:03 track record-setting win for aged trotting mares and a 1:58.2 track record performance for aged pacing geldings by Hockey Bum, a two-time third-place finisher in the last Le 5 Milles events.
