Eight local legends will do battle in a race that will turn back the clock for many harness racing fans at Northfield Park on Friday, August 14.
The “Legends Drivers Challenge” will pit Northfield leading drivers of days gone by in a trotting event that will serve as a warm-up for the $400,000 Carl Milstein Memorial, a Grand Circuit event for three-year-old colt pacers.
Dan Ross, who won last year’s inaugural Legends Race, will aim to defend his crown against previous-year competitors Gerry Bookmyer, William Irvine and Don McKirgan, as well as newcomers Jeff Fout, Del S. Miller, William Popio and Craig Stein. The eight veteran reinsmen were talented fan favourites that were leading drivers over the Flying Turns in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
Also on Milstein night, sophomore Ohio Sires Stakes pacing and trotting fillies will square off for purses of $40,000 per division.
Northfield’s Executive Vice President of Racing and Simulcasting, Dave Bianconi, is writing an Open Pace, a Fillies and Mares Open Pace and an Open Trot, each with a $20,000 purse.
Entries for all the races to be contested on Friday night, August 14 at Northfield are due by 9 a.m. (Eastern) on Tuesday morning, August 11.
