Last to the quarter pole but first to the finish line was the story for Woodmere Finesse in Friday’s featured tilt at Truro Raceway.
The four-year-old daughter of Articulator-Woodmere Teardrop was in no hurry in the early going, but that wasn’t the case in the late stages of the $1,675 winners over event for pacers.
Danny Romo got away sixth with Woodmere Finesse while Instant Shadow sliced out splits of :27.1, :56.3 and 1:26.4. Woodmere Finesse moved off the rail coming to the half, and was second and driving at the three-quarter pole. Woodmere Finesse used a :30.2 closing panel to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Instant Shadow in 1:57.1. Taking home third prize was Preceptor.
Bernard McCallum trains the distaffer for Edward Maher of Lower Sackville, NS. The mare won for the seventh time this season and for the 13th time in her career. She’s closing in on $55,000 in lifetime earnings.
Shanghai B G suffered broken equipment shortly after the start of Friday’s feature race at Truro Raceway, but he still managed to take home a fifth-place cheque. His trainer, Dawn Ellis Abbott, has generously donated her trainer’s cheques from the Friday and Saturday to benefit the families of victims of the Fredericton shooting.
Ellis Abbott had a second-place finish earlier with Charlie Drummond in Race 7 and a fifth-place finish with Desir Dorleans in Race 9. She has also pledged her 5% trainer’s fee from Goliath Reigns in Race 6 on Saturday at Exhibition Park Raceway.
