After winning his last two assignments by a combined 22-3/4 lengths, Euchred ($7.60) worked to just outlast a first-over charge from Cam Cool in Wednesday evening’s (August 30) featured $1,100 winners-over pacing event at Inverness Raceway.
Trainer-driver Walter Walker sent the five-year-old Shadow Play gelding immediately to the front at race’s outset, clearing Western Churchill (Redmond KC Doucet) and controlling early splits of :28.3 and :58.2. Cam Cool (Alex MacQuarrie) began his first-over ascent from fifth well before reaching the midway stage, but applied steady pressure to Euchred through the final quarter mile. After being pressed to the third split in 1:28.2, Euchred refused to relinquish the lead, battling to prevail by half a length in 1:58.1. Cam Cool finished another seven lengths in front of R Es Aiden (Rodney Gillis), who rallied from last to capture third.
The win was Euchred’s eighth in 16 seasonal starts for owner Kayla Habicht Walker, and the 27th of his career.
