All eyes were on heavily-favoured Miss Paris in Thursday’s $130,000 OSS Gold Series Final for three-year-old trotting fillies at Mohawk Racetrack, but Lexus Helios rained on that foe’s parade thanks to her come-from-behind score in the rich tilt.
Mike Saftic engineered the victory with Lexus Helios, who rallied from out of the clouds to win in a career-best clocking of 1:54.1.
Lexus Helios got away seventh from her Post 6 position while Justasmalltowngirl and Frisky Strike battled to the quarter pole in :27.1. Sugar Wheeler brushed from third to first as the fillies hit the backstretch, and hot on her heels was the 6-5 favourite, Miss Paris. Miss Paris was parked by Sugar Wheeler to the half in :56, but the favourite eventually worked her way to the top.
Miss Paris sprinted away from the others and led by 2-1/4 lengths at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.1, but the quick third quarter – and a pair of rivals – caught up with her in deep stretch. Lexus Helios, who was fourth over and rolling wide at the head of the lane, stormed home in :28.3 to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Daylon Miracle. Miss Paris crawled home in :30.4 to finish third.
Breeder Norm Dunstan of Caledon Village, ON trains and owns the daughter of Ken Warkentin-Lexus Hall who pushed her lifetime earnings to $136,250 with the win. After going winless in her only rookie start, the filly has put together an impressive 6-1-0 record in her 15 starts this season.
