The final preliminary leg of the Slots Cup Series went postward in the form of two $12,000 divisions on Sunday afternoon at Clinton Raceway, with P J Lucky and Winter Blues picking up victories
in the respective assignments.
P J Lucky survived a first-over journey to take home bragging rights in the first split for the duo of driver Terry Kerr and trainer Peter Davis. The four-year-old son of Camluck drew clear at the head of the lane and went on to win by a one-length margin over Richlyn Hugh in a time of 1:58.3. Mach Beth rounded out the top three.
Bred and owned by Davis of Arva, ON, the gelding won for the second time this season and for the seventh time in his career. He has stashed away more than $22,000 in earnings this season, while his career bankroll sits at $67,395.
Winter Blues notched his first win of the season thanks to a front-stepping score in the second division for driver Stuart Sowerby. The Ian Reid-trained four-year-old son of Astreos chopped out panels of :29.1, :59.1 and 1:29.1 before roaring home in :28.2 to stop the teletimer in 1:57.3. His margin of victory was a head over Monster In Law. Greek Island rounded out the top three.
Island Heat Stables Inc., David Hoy, Ian Reid and Ian Reid share ownership on the five-time winner, who has banked more than $20,000 this season and more than $88,000 to date.
The top point earners from the preliminary legs of the Slots Cup Series will have the chance to square off in the $100,000 final at Hiawatha Horse Park on September 12.
