Kolby Two Step posted the quickest mile of the novice pacing males with a 1:55.3 effort. The gelding by Betterthancheddar led every step through fractions of :29.3, :58.3 and 1:27.3 before cruising to the finish in a :28 final quarter 2-1/2 lengths better than pocket-sitter Ship Disturber. Bob McClure sat in the bike behind the Tim Gillespie trainee.
Unity capped the portion of the morning for the babies with the fastest mile for the pacing fillies – a 1:59.2 effort. The Hes Watching filly tracked down the late-loose leader Kays Writer, who seized the lead when pacesetter Ivory Hanover veered wide and backed through the field, to win by a head in rein to Jody Jamieson for trainer Jack Darling.
Bob McClure and trainer Luc Blais teamed for the fastest mile by a freshman trotting colt when Star Power Hanover stopped the clock in 2:01. The son of Wheeling N Dealin sat fifth through a tempo of :31.1, 1:01.2 and 1:31.1 set by Bubba Louie before storming home in :28.2 to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Rose Run Xcaliber.
The fastest trotting mile by a two-year-old filly was posted by Lovin Julie, a 2:00 winner. She set the pace through the first half of :30.1 and 1:00.4 and sat pocket to Gyre Hanover to three-quarters in 1:30 before popping and lunging to a one-length victory. Louis-Philippe Roy sat in the sulky behind the Tony O’Sullivan trainee.
