It’s almost time for the Harness Horse Youth Foundation Camp! The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen’s Association, is getting ready to welcome the Harness Horse Youth Foundation Camp to the historic five-eighths-mile track in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania from Monday, Aug. 5 to Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Six girls and one boy, from various locations throughout Pennsylvania and New York, will be arriving on Monday morning and will spend an exciting three days learning all about harness racing while working hands-on with the HHYF’s stable of Trottingbred horses. Their days will be filled spending time with the horses, and learning about their care and grooming, equipment, conformation, lameness, history, stable management, and equine careers.
The camp director, Ellen Taylor, and her counselors, are assisted by Pocono horsemen who volunteer their time for the week with the various learning activities. Previous experience with horses is not necessary, and for most of the children, this will be their first time around horses. All in all, it will be a very exciting few days!
The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono and the PHHA are looking forward to hosting the camp again this year, and watching the future stars of harness racing learn and have fun.
