A pair of youngsters made their way to the winner’s circle for the first time in their respective careers during Monday’s 10-race card at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Lariat Seelster took on six foes in a $14,000 overnight assignment dedicated strictly to two-year-olds, and the gelding came away victorious in 2:00.1 for the tandem of driver Roger Mayotte and trainer Bob Young.
The son of Kadabra-Ladycane sat a two-hole trip behind Priceless Ruler for most of the mile, but he took over command in deep stretch and went on to win by a half-length margin over Priceless Ruler. Arcanum was third.
Young shares ownership on the freshman with Robert Deveau, Frank Chiaravalloti and Jaftica Stable. The group shelled out $54,000 to purchase the youngster from last year’s London Selected Yearling Sale. He’s managed to rack up over $12,000 to date.
Flash A Smile, who was a $37,000 purchase from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, blew away the foes she faced in a $14,000 tilt for Ontario Sired Grassroots starters.
The daughter of Bettors Delight-Mcgrin N Mcbare It was treated to a two-hole trip by teamster Louis Philippe Roy, who put his charge in motion in the late stages of the mile. She tore out of the pocket and charged home in :28.2 to win by more than seven lengths over Sunshineatthebeach in 1:55.4. Windsun Jagra was third.
Trainer Scott McEneny shares ownership on the pacing lass with Brad Grant, Teresa Davidson and Martwest Racing Stable. The group has watched her assemble a 1-1-1 record from just five starts while banking close to $13,000 in the process.
