Favourites Falter In Young Guns Opener

The first leg of the Young Guns Pacing Series began on Saturday night at Sudbury Downs with Real Simple and Schooner turning in a pair of mild upset performances

Sent postward as the 9-2 fourth choice in the first $8,500 division, Real Simple ($10.90) romped to an 11 length victory in 1:56.4. Wayne MacLean drove the four-year-old son of Real Artist to his sixth win in 13 seasonal starts for trainer Meighan MacLennan and owner Dwight Lamkey of Black River Bridge, N.B. Lexicam and Western Place finished second and third.

Schooner ($8.30), tied as the 3-1 third choice in the second division, rebuffed a challenge from Call Me Oscar as he went wire-to-wire to win in 1:59 by three-quarters of a length. Flight Night and Peruvian Star were second and third. The sophomore son of American Ideal, trained by Yvon Lamoureux for owner Marc Belisle of Val Caron, Ont., was driven to victory by David Dowling. The win was the colt's sixth in 21 starts this year.
