Battle River Storm (Kelly Hoerdt) took command of the field from Post 5 and led the way past fractions of :26.4, :55.4 and 1:24.1 before the backfield closed in on that gelding. Among the late closers was elimination winner Bachelor Pad and trainer-driver Gerry Hudon, who after sitting seventh early on, swept three-deep at the third quarter station and rallied home in :28.2 to prevail by half a length over Roper (Rod Hennessy) in a new mark of 1:53.1. The other elimination winner, Silver Eagle (Bill Tainsh Jr.), finished three-quarters of length back in third.
The chestnut son of Brandons Cowboy-Duplex notched his fifth win in 11 starts this year and lifted his earnings to $62,022 for Hudon and his partners, R. Lynn Kowalevsky of Airdrie, Alta., and Monica Hudon of Edmonton, Alta. Now a winner of eight races lifetime, Bachelor Pad boasts a total bankroll of $135,631.
He paid $6 to win as part of the 2-1 second choice entry.
In other action, Blue Star Quest equalled Cenalta Powers' 1:57.2 track record for two-year-old gelding pacers in the opener. The son of Camystic-Scotian Sign was driven to his first victory in six starts by Jeff Stone for trainer Glenn Lutz and owners William and Dianne Neish of High River, Alta.
